The Hopkinton, Mass., storag and information managementgiantt (NYSE: EMC) said Wednesdauy the Media Lab sponsorship is one of several initiatives coordinated out of EMC Research which will be located at 11 Cambridge Ctr. in Mass. The center will house EMC’e security-business research lab, RSA as well as about a dozenj researchers, technologists and business leadersacross EMC’s business units. The compan y also has research facilities in China andSantsa Clara, Calif.
“Research and advanced technology groupsacross EMC, along with our globaol university research partners, are discovering and exploring new technologieds that will shape the future of digitalp information,” said Jeff Nick, EMC senior vice president and chieff technology officer, in a statement. “This is an incrediblw opportunity for EMC to bring together some ofthe world’ s leading research minds and innovators in areas such as personalk information management, information integration and cloucd computing.” As a consortium sponsoe of the MIT Media Lab, EMC will be able to accese the center’s research on how people use and interacft with new technologies.
EMC said its initial collaboratioj will be on new models for data ownershioand usage, interfaces for busines transactions and health care IT initiatives. A consortium sponsorshipl costs $200,000 per year for a minimum of threed years. Sponsors receive full intellectual property rightes to technology developed at the lab duringtheir sponsorship. The announcemenyt comes a week after EMC and a grou of universities and technology companiesa announced the development of a high performance computing researcyh facilityin Holyoke, Mass. Other tech giants have builft dedicated R&D lab in Cambridge in recengt years.
(Nasdaq: MSFT), (Nasdaq: GOOG) and (NYSE: IBM) built researcj centers in the city in the pasttwo years.
